Cento Veljanovski is Managing Partner of Case Associates, a competition and regulatory economics practice, and IEA Fellow in Law and Economics, and Adjunct Senior Fellow, Centre for Regulation and Market Analysis, University of South Australia. He has consistently been voted one of the ‘most highly regarded’ competition economists by Global Competition Review. He regularly advises companies and acts as an expert witness in competition law, regulatory, commercial and damage litigation. He has advised on the prosecutions and defence of firms accused of price fixing, and in claims for damages in Europe, Australia and New Zealand. His recent books include Economic Principles of Law, (Cambridge University Press 2007) and The Economics of Law, (Institute of Economic Affairs, 2008).

Punishing European Cartels
Antitrust authorities across the world are waging war against domestic and international cartels. The European Commission in particular has intensified its prosecution activities and increased dramatically the fines it imposes on cartelists. This article undertakes a statistical overview of the Commission’s prosecution activities and fines over the last decade of pan-European (and in many cases global) cartels, principally under the current penalty guidelines which became effective on 1 September 2006.
