Roderick MackenzieRoderick Mackenzie is qualified as an engineer and lawyer with over 20 years experience in the water industry worldwide. He began his career in the sector in Africa as Resident Engineer on Gaborone Water Treatment Works, Botswana, in 1990. He went on to be a senior policy advisor guiding governments through the institutional changes to the arrangements for their water industries necessary to attract private investment. Amongst other high level advisory roles he advised the Prime Minister’s office of the Republic of Georgia and drafted the first stage economic regulatory framework for the water sector for execution by President Shevardnadze. He acted as the Commissioner for Water within the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission under the United Nations Mission in Kosovo and worked as a consultant to Seureca, the consulting wing of Veolia Water in Paris. After reading law at the Universities of Birmingham and Oxford, UK, Roderick advised Northern Ireland’s Department for Regional Development on the corporatisation of the province’s water industry. He has also advised international sponsors and banks on privately financed water and wastewater projects in the Middle East and Africa, including new build projects, refinancing and secondary market mergers and acquisitions. He chaired the International Desalination Association 2009 World Congress in Dubai on wastewater re-use and has advised various international law firms on risk allocation and the structure of water transactions.
