John Williamson was educated at the London School of Economics and Princeton University. In his early career he taught at several universities in England, the US, and Brazil, and served in the UK Treasury and the International Monetary Fund. Since 1981 he has been a Senior Fellow at what is now called the Peterson Institute for International Economics, from which he took leave in 1996–99 to serve as the World Bank’s Chief Economist for South Asia.
