is a Fellow of St John’s College, Oxford, and one of the founders of the Centre for the Study of African Economies in the University’s Department of Economics. His main research interests are in the fields of public economics, and of macroeconomic policy analysis in low-income countries; his research includes studies of Ethiopia, Indonesia, Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. He has been a visiting professor at Princeton University, the Australian National University, and the University of Clermont Ferrand, a visiting scholar at the IMF, and served as chair of the research sub-committee of the African Economic Research Consortium. He has worked for the British and Kenyan Governments, and acted as consultant to the World Bank, ILO, European Union, and DFID.
